Cet ouvrage met au cœur de son propos une interrogation simple : dans l'organisation complexe de l'espace de l'église médiévale, les emplacements choisis pour les images qui ornent les murs et les objets n'offrent pas toujours la possibilité de voir celles-ci, d'en déchiffrer le contenu. Certaines semblent réservées à des groupes de l'assemblée stationnant dans des espaces spécifiques, d'autres ne sont pas visibles depuis les principales zones affectées aux fidèles ou aux clercs, d'autres encore sont situées trop haut. Le rapport, a priori évident, entre représentation et visibilité se trouve donc souvent démenti, appelant alors une nouvelle notion, celle de présence. Analyser la tension existant entre ces trois catégories - figuration, visibilité et présence - implique une étude croisée des œuvres figurées, des monuments et des sources écrites. Les notions de mobilité et de fixité permettent également de prendre en compte les multiples jeux d'échelles à l'œuvre dans ce lieu rituel qu'est l'église, impliquant des objets, des manuscrits, des dispositifs liturgiques, des gestes, des déplacements physiques, dialoguant avec un décor appliqué au corps même du monument, épousant l'immobilité de l'architecture. Les cinq chapitres thématiques qui organisent ce volume mettent en regard différents cas issus de l'Occident médiéval et de l'Orient byzantin, selon une chronologie longue (de l'Antiquité tardive à la fin du Moyen Âge), dans une volonté de décloisonner les disciplines et les aires géographiques afin de tirer tous les enseignements d'une approche transversale de l'image médiévale.

Nesta obra pretende-se estudar as duas formas rituais da liturgia romana, comparando-as e procurando entender os motivos do cisma, ao mesmo tempo em que se pretende abarcar as ações do atual pontífice e as reações no mundo católico e fora dele. Para tanto, usar-se-á como fonte o Missal tridentino de 1570 e o novo Ordo Missæ de Paulo VI de 1969, bem como os catecismos formulados após os Concílios de Trento (1545-1563) e o Vaticano II (1962-1965), tendo por objetivo comparar suas notificações sobre o culto católico e seu significado. Durante o processo de análise tem-se a intenção de vislumbrar o impacto das mudanças no seio da Igreja, pois constata-se uma espécie de endurecimento no final do pontificado de João Paulo II, com a promulgação de documentos litúrgicos que tendem a criar empecilhos para possíveis abusos durante a missa (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 2003) - há a retomada e destaque do sentido sacrificial do culto católico e uma série de recomendações impostas pela Congregação do Culto Divino para celebração da missa (Redemptionis Sacramentum, 2004). Fato é que, quarenta anos após o mencionado Concílio Vaticano II e quase quatro décadas de utilização do novo rito da missa, é rara qualquer menção específica na historiografia recente da Igreja sobre o andamento de tal tema. A maioria dos livros de história da Igreja que traça um levantamento de fatos até o Vaticano II, apresentam-no como uma espécie de revolução interna da estrutura eclesiástica sem, contudo, aprofundar o tema ou mostrar as crises na Igreja decorrentes deste.

Riv-Ellen Prell spent eighteen months of participant observation field research studying a countercultural havurah to determine why these groups emerged in the United States during the 1970s. In her book, she explores the central questions posed by the early havurot and their founders. She also examines the havurah as a development of American Judaism, continuing-rather than rejecting-many of the previous generations' ideas about religion. Combining history and ethnography, Prell uses current theories about ritual and prayer to understand men's and women's struggles with their religious tradition and their desire to create community.

This book is unique and of great importance for theologians from diverse traditions but who all share the relevance of the academic Reformed discourse. The book focuses on, and forms part of celebrating 500 years since the start of the Reformation during the 16th century.
